Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed strong optimism about the future of India-Maldives relations, asserting that ties between the two nations will remain robust regardless of the political leadership in either country.

Speaking to ANI during the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives—an event graced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi—Nasheed praised India’s consistent support and cultural connection with the island nation.

“India has maintained good relations with us, and whatever the government, I am sure we are going to have a very bright future as well,” he stated.

Nasheed noted that PM Modi enjoyed the cultural events and acknowledged the deep-rooted similarities between Indian and Maldivian traditions. “It’s a great honour that the Prime Minister visited us… He spent several hours here and appreciated the performances by schoolchildren, the Maldives Cadet Corps, and traditional groups,” he added.

Reflecting on India’s past assistance during financial hardships, Nasheed stressed that maintaining strong bilateral ties is crucial for the Maldives’ safety, security, and prosperity.

He also shared that his meeting with PM Modi included discussions on environmental concerns and his work with the Climate Vulnerable Forum. “We had a good discussion… The Prime Minister was interested in how we’re addressing climate issues,” Nasheed said.

Highlighting economic cooperation, he expressed hope for a swift signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries and lauded India’s ongoing credit line and community development projects. “These high-impact projects help local communities and contribute significantly to our prosperity,” he noted.

PM Modi’s visit marked a milestone in India-Maldives relations, with agreements signed in key areas like infrastructure, technology, and climate action, reinforcing a shared vision for regional cooperation and development.
